The programme, dubbed “What’s Your DRINKiQ”’, which will run over two weekends will directly impact 2,000 second year students of the IAS.

“What’s Your DRINKiQ”’ is an interactive course on responsible alcohol use designed to educate and provide factual information on the effect of alcohol to enable young adults to make informed choices with regard to alcohol use.

Launch

Launching the programme, Ms Preba Greenstreet, Corporate Relations Director of GGBL, said the company was passionate about the programme and the opportunity it presented to engage with young adults who, without the requisite knowledge of alcohol effects, may inadvertently abuse it.

“This partnership allows us to prevent abuse through knowledge sharing and a targeted intervention. We look forward to strengthening this partnership to a point where this programme may be embedded in the curricula of the university,” she added.

Professor Akosua Adomako Ampofo, Director of IAS, said backed by research results over the past two years, they had seen tremendous improvement in the knowledge base of our students with regard to the effect of alcohol.

Commenting on the programme, Professor Angela Ofori-Atta, a Clinician and Associate Professor at the Department of Psychiatry of the UGMS, said “we have been involved in co-creating and running “What’s Your DRINKiQ” with GGBL over the past three years and have seen at firsthand the impact this has made on participants. Our motivation for this programme has always been to provide young adults with the right knowledge and tools to prevent alcohol abuse.”

Programme

The programme demystifies the subject of alcohol, covering areas such as how the body processes alcohol, the short and long term effects of alcohol abuse and what constitutes the responsible use of alcohol.

Since its inception in 2012, more than 4,000 students of the University of Ghana and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology have successfully gone through the programme.
