Police intercept cross-border ammunition smuggle in Volta Region
The police on Friday intercepted a large cache of ammunition, which had been concealed on a commercial bus, which was heading towards neighbouring Benin.
The seizure was made at dawn on Friday, April 18, 2025, during a routine security check at the Tadzewu-Mitsrikasa Police barrier in the Volta Region.
A police statement issued by the Public Affairs Unit said officers stopped a Hyundai bus with registration number GR 8246-Q, which was travelling from Accra towards Benin, and conducted a search.
It said 60 cartons of AAA cartridges containing 15,000 rounds, along with 72 cartons of BB cartridges amounting to 18,000 rounds were found.
The ammunition was hidden in sacks and buried beneath passengers’ luggage, the police said.
The driver, a 45-year-old Abasou Fousseni, and his co-driver, 38-year-old Salisu Jalilu, were arrested on the spot.
According to the police, both men denied knowledge of the consignment, which the police said were being smuggled.
The police said their preliminary investigations identified the co-driver as the individual who loaded the ammunition in the vehicle.
The driver has since been released on bail to ensure that the passengers arrive at their final destination, while the co-driver has been detained assisting with investigations.
He is expected to be arraigned in court on Tuesday, April 22, 2025.
The police stated investigations are ongoing to determine the source and intended destination of the ammunition.
