Ghana aspiring to lead AI adoption in Africa – Sam George
The Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Sam Nartey George, says the government was aiming to make Ghana the leading hub in Artificial Intelligence (AI) adoption in Africa.
In a television interview Channel One's The Point of View programme on Monday night [April 14, 2025], Mr Sam George emphasised the urgent need for Ghana to reskill and upskill its workforce in order to take advantage of emerging AI-driven opportunities.
“We are living AI at this point in time so it is important that we reskill and upskill our people and so we are looking to have Ghana as that hub that is able to uptake AI and be the hub for Africa because when you look at AI today most of the tools and the machine learning models are all western centered," he stated.
He observed that most AI tools and machine learning models currently in use are developed with a Western focus, which leaves Africa significantly underrepresented in global AI advancements.
Mr Sam George stressed the importance of proactive measures to ensure Ghana and Africa as a whole are not left behind in the digital revolution.
He pointed out that by 2030, one in four people worldwide will be African, making it crucial for Africa to be actively involved in shaping AI technologies.
“However when you look at the demographics of the world by 2030 one in four human beings will be African. It is a critical demographic that is not well captured,” he added.
To address this, the Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting AI education and digital skills development.
He highlighted initiatives such as the One Million Coders Programme, aimed at equipping Ghanaian youth with essential digital competencies for the AI era.
