172 Youth benefit from Edikan Scholarship Scheme
One hundred and seventy-two youth from communities within the operational areas of Perseus Mining Ghana Limited have benefited from scholarships amounting to GH¢278,279 under the Edikan Trust Fund as part of the company’s corporate social responsibility efforts.
The beneficiaries received bursaries to support their educational pursuits at a ceremony held at Wassa Nkonya in the Western Region.
The event, christened Edikan Scholarship Day, brought together traditional authorities, community leaders, parents, students and officials of Perseus Mining Ghana Limited.
This year’s scholarship allocation represents an increase of GH¢68,279 over the previous year’s expenditure, underscoring the company’s growing commitment to education and human capital development in its host communities.
Speaking at the ceremony, the General Manager of Perseus Mining, Alexander Oduro, said: “At the heart of every thriving community is the power of knowledge.
Education equips individuals with the tools to improve their lives and contribute meaningfully to society.
As a company, we will not relent in our efforts to empower our host communities through education”.
He urged the scholarship recipients to work hard and justify the confidence reposed in them.
Board Chair
The Board Chairman of Perseus Mining Ghana Limited and Paramount Chief of the Owirenkyi Traditional Area, Ehunabobrim Prah Agyensaim, described education as a powerful instrument for social transformation.
“Education gives young people the skills to dream beyond their circumstances,” he said, adding that “it strengthens the pillars of society by nurturing thinkers, innovators and responsible citizens, and creates communities that are self-reliant and capable of turning challenges into opportunities.”
He said this conviction had informed the company’s consistent support for the scholarship programme through the Edikan Trust Fund over the years.
Nana Agyensaim further disclosed that Perseus Mining had contributed over GH¢28 million towards development projects, including scholarships, in its catchment communities and areas since the inception of the Edikan Trust Fund.
Fund’s support
The Chairman of the Edikan Trust Fund, Akwasi Gyima Botah, indicated that the Edikan Trust Fund was established as a development vehicle to improve the socio-economic well-being of communities within the company’s operational areas.
The fund supports projects in education, health, water and sanitation, livelihood empowerment and infrastructure development.
A flagship component of the fund is the Edikan Scholarship Scheme, which provides financial assistance to deserving but needy students at the tertiary level.
Over the years, hundreds of youth have benefited from the programme, many of whom have gone on to complete their education and are now contributing to their communities.
Through initiatives such as the Edikan Scholarship, Perseus Mining Ghana Limited continues to position education as a cornerstone for sustainable development in Ghana’s mining communities.
Some of the beneficiaries could not hide their joy as they expressed appreciation for the gesture.
They noted that they would do all within their means to ensure the investment in their education yielded positive dividends.
