2025 in review: A significant year for development in Volta Region

The resumption of work on Phase II of the Blekusu Sea Defence Project was one of the significant events in the Volta Region last year.

Since President Mahama cut the sod for the project in July 2025, work has been progressing steadily at the site.

The project, which aims to protect coastal communities in the Ketu South municipality, is scheduled to be completed in four years.

Big Push

Then, in the middle of September 2025, the government’s flagship development programme, the USD 10 billion ‘Big Push’ project, aimed at comprehensively addressing the nation’s infrastructure, took off at Titrini, near Ho.

President Mahama cut the sod for the redevelopment works on the first set of roads under the initiative, the 117-kilometre stretch from Atimpoku in the Eastern Region through the Volta Region towns of Anyirawase, Ho, Denu and to Aflao.

President Mahama said the project would serve as a model for other road projects under the initiative.

The ceremony was witnessed by the Agbogbomefia of Asogli, Togbe Afede XIV and members of the Volta Region House of Chiefs, as well as a large number of enthusiastic and cheering members of the public.

The Big Push project also includes the 47-kilometre Ho-UHAS Bypass to Titrinu road and the 7.7-Kilometre Ho Guinness Depot to Ho Airport road.

Oxygen City

On December 17, 2025, the President cut the sod for the multimillion-dollar Oxygen City housing project at Agbokope, near Ho, and said it bore ample testimony of the government’s stance to ensure every region got its fair share of the national cake.

The project, which comprises 200 affordable housing units for workers, in its first phase, is in line with the extended mandate of the Tema Development Company (TDC) to provide housing units in the entire country.

It is scheduled to be completed in 24 months.

It comes with shopping malls, educational and health facilities and an entertainment centre among other facilities.

Te Za

The chief, queens and people of Asogli climaxed their Te Za (yam festival) celebration with a grand durbar at the Ho Jubilee Park on October 3.

The guest of honour was the Vice-President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.

Meanwhile, the Stanbic Bank, on November 18, donated office equipment worth GH¢120, 000 to the Medical Tourism Centre of the Ho Teaching Hospital (HTH).

The items included a 4-in-1 workstation, six swivel chairs, two air conditioners, one metal cabinet, two printers, two desktop computers and one laptop computer.

“These tools are fundamental to setting up a functional medical tourism unit that delivers efficient services, enhances patient comfort, and supports international standard care,” said the Brand and Marketing Head of Stanbic, Mawuko Afadzinu, as he presented the items to the HTH Director of Administration, George Tetteh.

In the same month, a ‘Food, Agriculture Technology and Sustainability’ conference ended in Ho, where the Minister of Agriculture, Eric Opoku, announced the government had secured €47 million from the European Union in aid of irrigation farming in the country.

Still in November 2025, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), Professor Lydia Aziato, gave an assurance that the university would continue to support traditional medicine practitioners to build their capacity with viable training programmes and award them diplomas and other certificates for the programmes at the campus.

From the Naval Training Command) at Nutekpor, near Sogakope, the Flag Officer Commanding, Commodore James Adongo Agambire, pledged the command’s firm stance to support the socio-economic progress in the surrounding communities.

This was at his induction ceremony at the command on November 9.

Parliamentary Network Africa

Earlier in October, four members of the Parliamentary Network Africa visited the joint Ghana-Togo Border Post at Akanu, near Dzodze, to assess the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) initiative on the free movement of persons across the frontier between the two countries.
