37,000 Candidates write licensure exams

A total of 37,000 candidates across the country are sitting for this year’s examination.

Of the number, 5,000 are rewriting the exam while 32,000 are writing it for the first time.

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, visited the candidates at the Accra Senior High School centre, where some of the candidates wrote the examination

He interacted with the candidates and encouraged them to give of their best, stressing the government’s commitment to supporting aspiring teachers through policy reforms.

He assured the first-time candidates that those who did not pass would be given another opportunity to rewrite the examination.

Mr Iddrisu reaffirmed his earlier directive to the National Teaching Council (NTC) to provide a final window for the previous cohort of unsuccessful candidates to resit the exam before the August 30 deadline.

Licensure regime

He said the current licensing regime would be replaced by a new system for assessing teacher qualifications.

The new framework would shift focus from standardised examinations to a more practical, skills-based approach, emphasising academic grounding and classroom experience over formal testing.

The minister said the move was part of the government’s plan to phase out the current licensure examination model and integrate it into the final year assessments of teacher training institutions.

“We are honouring the manifesto pledge. While we welcome suggestions, we will not compromise on quality.

We are committed to improving the quality of teachers,” Mr Iddrisu stated.

He further stressed the need to build a strong professional foundation for Ghana’s teachers, highlighting continuous assessment and professional development as critical tools to enhance teaching standards.

The Education Minister’s visit forms part of ongoing efforts by the ministry to ensure transparency, fairness and inclusiveness in Ghana’s teacher qualification process while aligning future reforms with the broader goal of improving educational outcomes nationwide.
