The Proprietor of Vision Redeemers Academy, Apostle Alfred Dorm, says the determination and resilience so far displayed by Remember Akakpo cannot be allowed to go to waste due to a lack of financial assistance.
He, therefore, appealed to the public for support to enable the 15-year-old girl to realise her dream of entering senior high school (SHS).
Mr Dorm explained that the innocent girl braved all odds, including studying at night in an environment where there is no electricity, to pass her Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
“That, coupled with her tenacity to remain in school despite losing nine of her colleagues through a canoe disaster at a canal separating her school from the island she commuted from daily, warranted every support to enable her to go further,” he stressed.
Defiance
Miss Akakpo, who defied the danger of embarking on routine boat rides to school for two years along the same route at Faana in Accra, where nine of her schoolmates perished, has gained admission to SHS, but now faces the challenge of catering for her prospectus and personal needs.
During the BECE period, Apostle Dorm said, a lady who resided at the old site of the school, near the canoe disaster area, accommodated Remember until she finished her last paper.
Subsequently, Remember was successfully placed in Zion College at Anloga in the Volta Region during the placement of qualified BECE candidates into second cycle schools across the country.
Appeal
“I am impressed with Remember’s courage and performance, looking at the circumstances through which she comes to school, such as crossing streams.
“Moreover, considering where she is coming from, it means she would do better in the right environment,” he added.
“Please, people should come to the aid of Remember because she can be a role model to other girls and even do something for her community and country at large,” he said.
Apostle Dorm said the parents had taken custody of Zion College’s prospectus and that all they needed was to raise money for her to purchase the items and go to school.
He expressed the hope that help would come to Remember.
