ASA Savings renovates Akropong School for the Blind vocational department

The longstanding difficulties faced by pupils of the Akropong School for the Blind while learning in the building that housed the vocational department are now over.

This is because ASA Savings and Loans Limited has renovated the old dilapidated structure at a cost of GH¢30,000 to make it comfortable for the students to study.

The old building had no openings for ventilation, hence the students were always drenched in sweat.

Aside from that, it had not been painted for years, thus looking unattractive to the students.

Inauguration

The newly rehabilitated building was inaugurated and handed over to the school at a ceremony attended by ASA officials, staff of the school and some of the students.

In his inaugural address, the Chief Information Officer of ASA Savings and Loans, Dr Bill Yeboah Kyeremeh, said his outfit had to come to their rescue in response to a request to rehabilitate the building.

He indicated that, as part of the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative, it undertook the renovation of the structure to help the students feel more at home while studying in the building.

Challenges

According to Dr Kyeremeh, since the company has been operating in communities, it had to identify challenges within such communities to be addressed, and that was why the company decided to put the building in good shape to make it comfortable for both learners and teachers.

"Our company is a community-oriented concern, and that is why we are always willing to solve challenges facing such communities to make the people feel at home so that they will be able to continue doing business with us.

Dr Kyeremeh gave the assurance that such assistance to communities and institutions throughout the country would continue.

In his response, the Senior House Master of the school, Sylvanus Apiribu, who was highly elated and spoke on behalf of the Headmistress, Veronica Dery, said the rehabilitation of the building had made it airy so the students would no longer perspire when studying.

Mr Apiribu further stated that with the renovation, effective teaching and learning would take place because both teachers and learners would be comfortable in the building.

He said the major challenge facing the school currently is the lack of learning materials as well as the feeding of students and therefore appealed to all and sundry, especially well-to-do Ghanaians in society, to help address the issue.

He expressed gratitude to the company for  assisting them in making life more comfortable for the learners of the rehabilitated building.

Some of the learners who expressed their happiness to the Daily Graphic pointed out that they would now be able to study comfortably without any hindrance.
