Ashanti West ECG commissions 37 distribution transformers to boost power supply

The Ashanti West Regional office of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has commissioned 37 new transformers as part of efforts to improve power supply in the region.

The exercise, which also included the injection of additional transformers to relieve existing transformers and the extension of some High Tension and Low Voltage lines, was completed at the cost of GH¢ 10,944,456.02.

The commissioning of the distribution transformers comes after the power distribution company and the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition announced a nationwide project to upgrade some distribution transformers that had reached full capacity across the country at the beginning of the year.

The power distributor has also intensified transformer inspection to check the integrity of existing transformers and pick load readings as part of efforts to improve power supply in the Ashanti Region.

Beneficiary communities

The newly installed distribution transformers are located at the Ahinsan, Abuakwa, Adum, Danyame, Kokoben, Bibiani, Suame and Offinso districts of the Ashanti West Region.

In an interview, the Ashanti West Regional General Manager, ECG, George Amoah, said the mission of the company was to provide quality, reliable and safe electricity services to support the socio-economic growth and development of Ghana.

He noted that before the installation of these new distribution transformers, the existing transformers at the locations had reached full capacity, resulting in occasional localised outages like low voltage and phase-offs, among others.

He said, “Once we identify that transformers are reaching full capacity or above 70 per cent, we upgrade some from 100kVA to 200kVA, 200kVA to 315kVA”.

Stable power

The General Manager revealed that the newly installed transformers would reduce system losses, improve reliability and stable power supply within the enclave to enhance customer satisfaction and ensure operational efficiency and flexibility.

The Regional Engineer, ECG, Ashanti West Region, Emmanuel Osei Amoako, underscored the importance of commissioning as a major step towards providing stable power to consumers.

Mr Amoako revealed that the company had also installed 36 new distribution transformers to replace faulty and damaged ones in areas such as Twedie, Patasi Police Depot, Afia Kobi SHS, Denkyemuoso White House, Ampabame Hills and other areas.

“We have also received approval to install an additional 35 new distribution transformers to upgrade other transformers and distribution lines that we have identified to be reaching full capacity to augment the power supply in the region”, he said.
