The Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has temporarily shut down the Teshie-Nungua Desalination Plant, in Greater Accra Region citing unresolved contractual challenges and the prolonged lack of critical maintenance as reasons for the decision.
According to management, the shutdown has become necessary to prevent further operational complications and ensure the safety and efficiency of the facility.
A statement signed by the Chief Manager, PR & Communications, Stanley Martey said, the desalination plant, which has, over the years, supplied potable water to communities such as Teshie, Nungua, Spintex, parts of Sakumono, La and their environs, has been a key source of water for residents along the eastern coastal corridor of Accra.
"Residents in the affected areas are advised to manage water usage prudently as the company works to resolve the issues."
Measures
The GWL assured the public that measures have been put in place to reduce the shutdown's impact on affected communities.
"These include rerouting water from alternative treatment plants and prioritising essential service facilities such as hospitals, schools and health centres.
“The GWL remains committed to delivering safe, reliable and continuous water supply services to our cherished customers.
We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused and assure the public that engagements are ongoing to expedite the resolution of the matter and restore normal operations,” the statement read.
The GWL further indicated that regular updates on progress and timelines for restoration would be communicated through its official website, social media platforms, the media and community engagement representatives.
History
The Teshie-Nungua Desalination Plant, which was inaugurated in 2015, was designed to produce about 13 million gallons of treated water per day from seawater to serve residents along the coastal belt.
However, the facility has faced several operational challenges over the years, including high maintenance costs and technical issues.
The management of the GWL has assured that it is working diligently to restore operations at the plant as soon as possible to ensure an uninterrupted water supply to residents.
