Immigration officer killed at Gbintiri checkpoint

An Immigration officer has been killed while another is critically wounded following an attack at the Gbintiri inland checkpoint in the East Mamprusi Municipality in the North East Region.

The incident, which occurred around 1:30 a.m. yesterday, claimed the life of Assistant Immigration Control Officer II (AICOII) Rafiq Mohammed, and left AICOII Oppong Daniel with severe gunshot wounds.

The injured person is receiving emergency care at the Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu, while the body of the deceased has been deposited at the same facility's morgue.

An AK-47 shell and a Ghana Immigration Service rifle with registration number GH/GIS/HQACN 668516-1646 were retrieved from the scene, indicating the attackers might have targeted the officers while they were on duty.

The North East Regional Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Robert Anabiik Anmain, confirmed the incident and said a full-scale investigation had been launched.

He indicated that the police had intensified surveillance to track down those behind this heinous act and bring them to justice.
