Ketu South tidal wave disaster to get worse - Volta Region NADMO Director warns

The tidal wave havoc at Agavedzi, Salakope and Amutinu in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region is set to get worse with the onset of the rains.

Already, the sea has crossed the Aflao-Keta road into the lagoon, raising fear and anxiety among the communities.

On a daily basis, residents scoop sand off the road to enable vehicles to ply it.

The acting Volta Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Paschal Agbagba, disclosed this when an Accra-based Non-Governmental

Organisation (NGO), the Kingdom of God Foundation, donated a consignment of relief items to the tidal wave victims through the Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, yesterday.

Mr Agbagba renewed his appeal to corporate bodies and public-spirited individuals to continue to support the affected communities in various ways until the problem is solved permanently.

The items, worth about GH¢30,000, which included 50 bags of rice and 30 high-density mattresses, were presented by a director of the NGO, John Paul Semavor.

He also presented an amount of GH¢20,000 to the regional minister to support his ‘Water for All’ initiative in the region.

Wellbeing

Mr Semavor said the NGO was highly concerned about the wellbeing of the tidal wave victims and quality education in the communities.

He gave an assurance that the Kingdom of God Foundation would continue to support the victims materially to reduce their pain.

Receiving the items, Mr Gunu expressed gratitude for the gesture, saying it was very touching.

He re-affirmed the government’s commitment to seek a permanent solution to the tidal wave problem in the area with the construction of a sea defence wall.

On the ‘Water for All’ initiative, Mr Gunu said water was so basic to life, for which reason no community should be deprived of clean water.

“We must also meet the SDG 6 at a time when water demand is growing rapidly in communities and institutions,” he added.
