Metro Mass Transit to increase fleet — MD
The Metro Mass Transit (MMT) company is to beef up its fleet of vehicles with about 500 new buses by the close of the year.
The move is part of strategies to augment its dwindled fleet to about 1,000 buses in the shortest possible time, to bring efficiency, reliability and affordability to the nation's transportation system.
In a strategic move that is expected to change the fortunes of the company, the management of MMT said the new fleet would include mini buses with 15-20 seats and luxurious air-conditioned coaches to improve safety, reliability and the comfort of passengers.
The number of operational vehicles has reduced in the recent past from about 2,003 to the current 130 vehicles.
To further boost efficiency, the transport company is also working to repair all broken-down vehicles to further increase the fleet.
Pragmatic measures
Speaking during a working visit to the company's yard in Cape Coast last Wednesday, the acting Managing Director of MMT, Cesar Kale, said despite the company's huge debt of GH¢123 million by the end of 2024, the company's new management was determined to put in place pragmatic measures.
Mr Kale said to facilitate the successful implementation of these measures the company would establish three departments, including Metro Express, Metro Cargo and Hiring divisions, to reflect the changing demands of the transportation sector.
He said all these efforts were to rebrand the MMT in line with the government’s commitment to providing a reliable, safe and affordable transportation network across the country.
He stressed that the MMT would also reassess all its landed properties, idle and encroached and seek investment to use as restaurants, hotels and bus terminals to help rake in money for the company.
He pledged to work to improve the working conditions of workers and urged them to also prioritise customer satisfaction by improving services to help change the fortunes of the company.
The Cape Coast branch manager of the MMT, Elsie Bart-Addison, said despite challenges the regional office of the MMT was able to accrue GH¢1.75 million, pledging staff commitment to revamping the company.
