Police investigate Abakomahene’s palace mob

The Chief of Akyem Asene, near Oda, Nana Karikari Apau, and four others are helping the Oda Divisional Police Command in investigations into an alleged  mob attack on the palace of the Abakomahene of the town, Nana Kodua Asiedu.

The mob is said to have vandalised the palace and forcibly taken away the black stool and other property, including a palanquin, gold dust, six guns, 40 full pieces of cloth, 40 cartons of Schnapps, a refrigerator, drums and Akofena.

The other suspects are Obaapanin Adwoa Asantewaa, Adu Boahene, Kwame Osam and Yaw Asiedu alias Kapole.

The Oda Divisional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Jeffrey Darko, who briefed the Daily Graphic at Oda today, said the suspects, whose caution statements had been taken, would soon be put before court on charges of unlawful entry, causing damage and stealing.

Throwing more light on the issue, ACP Darko said when the Asene palace was being reconstructed about five years ago, all the chiefs of Asene decided to keep the items at the Abakomahene’s palace for safekeeping.

He stated that on November 19, 2025, the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs at its meeting in Koforidua on November 19, 2025, dismissed an appeal by the Asenehene, Nana Karikari Apau, and the Queenmother, Nana Afia Kisiwaa, sent by the Akyem Kotoku Traditional Council, destooling the two traditional rulers.

The Regional House of Chiefs also fined each of them GH¢20,000 and cautioned them not to parade themselves as traditional rulers again.

ACP Darko said not satisfied with the Regional House of Chiefs’ ruling, Nana Karikari Apau and his cohorts mobilised some youth of the town around 4.30 a.m. on November 20, 2025, woke the Abakomahene up and demanded the keys to the three rooms in which the black stool and other items were being kept.

He stated that when Nana Asiedu told them to wait until daybreak for all the chiefs in the town to decide on the issue, the mob, led by the Asenehene, overpowered him, broke into the three rooms, ransacked the palace and forcibly took the items away.

ACP Darko said that when Nana Asiedu decided to make a call, Adu Boahene seized the mobile phone and went away with it.

He said Nana Asiedu initially lodged a complaint with the Asene police, who informed the Oda police, who had taken the matter up for further investigations and prosecution of the perpetrators.
