Rotary Club donates ICU equipment to War Memorial Hospital

The Rotary Club of Navrongo has donated a set of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) equipment to the War Memorial Hospital in the Kassena Nankana Municipality in the Upper East Region to enhance emergency and critical care delivery.

The equipment, worth GH¢500,000, included an ICU ventilator, fully electric automated hospital beds with remote control for five functions, a hospital syringe pump, a hospital biphasic defibrillator, a BG-800A blood gas analyser, a BKE auto loader serum electrolyte analyser, a KT-SP750 infusion pump and a 12.1-inch multi-parameter ICU hospital patient monitor.

The donation of the items formed part of the Rotary Club's ICU Support Project, with funding from the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) and other benevolent friends.

The Charter President of the Rotary Club of Navrongo, Dr Dennis Chirawurah, said the club was also constructing a dedicated ICU block at the hospital to ensure its effective operation.

“These ICU facilities will significantly help the hospital to improve emergency healthcare services.

“We are deeply grateful to the GPHA and the GMA for funding the purchase of all the equipment and for contributing to the construction of the ICU block,” he added.

He appealed to the municipal assembly, benevolent individuals and organisations to collaborate with the club to ensure the timely completion of the facility.

Relevance

The Medical Superintendent of the War Memorial Hospital, Dr  Abraham Titigah, described the donation as significant since it would improve the depth and scope of care.

“In the past, we often had to transfer critically ill patients to faraway facilities without the means to support them in transit fully.

“With this equipment and a functional ICU, we can now take over vital organ functions here and provide life-saving interventions without delay,” he said.

Dr Titigah assured the Rotary Club of the hospital's readiness and commitment to ensuring the equipment was used for the benefit of the general public.

The Upper East Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service, Dr Braimah Baba Abubakari, also said the absence of an ICU in the hospital had been a major challenge.

“Critical patients, including mothers and newborns, often had to be referred over long distances, sometimes even to the Northern Region, reducing their chances of survival.

With these facilities, many lives can now be saved here,” he said.

Appreciation

The Kassena Nankana Municipal Chief Executive, Faustina Abulu, praised the Rotary Club and its partners for their humanitarian support, adding that quality health care should be accessible to citizens in both urban centres and rural communities.

The Paramount Chief of the Navrongo Traditional Area, Pe Denis Belinia Aniakwa Adda Asapare II, also thanked the club for the donation.
