Ghanaian students spent US$306 million in US in 2024 - Report

Ghanaian students in universities across the United States contributed about US$306 million to the American economy in 2024, according to a new Open Doors report released on November 18, 2025.

The figure, based on U.S. Department of Commerce data, covers tuition, living costs, and other expenses.

The Institute of International Education and the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs report a 36.5 per cent rise in the number of Ghanaian students in the United States.

The total increased from 9,394 in the 2023 to 2024 academic year to 12,825 in 2024 to 2025.

This places Ghana 14th among countries sending students to the United States.

The report shows that 66.4 per cent of Ghanaian students in 2024 to 2025 were enrolled in graduate programmes.

The rest were in undergraduate, non-degree, or OPT categories.

The figures point to a strong interest in advanced studies among students from Ghana.

Illinois, Ohio, Texas, Massachusetts, and New York remain the main destinations for Ghanaian students, according to the Ghana Country Fact Sheet.

These states host large public and private universities where enrollment from Ghana continues to grow.

Universities such as the University of Illinois and Ohio State University report steady increases in the number of Ghanaian graduate students.
