Ghana’s Parliament admitted as full member of Francophone assembly

Ghana’s Parliament has been admitted as a full member of the Assemblée Parlementaire de la Francophonie (APF), marking a new phase in the country’s engagement with the broader Francophone legislative community.

The announcement was made during the 50th session of the APF, held in July 2025.

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, represented Ghana at the meeting and delivered a message on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, Parliament, and the people of Ghana.

Ghana’s full membership follows its transition from observer status, a change made after the country joined the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF) in 2024.

Mr Bagbin said the move reflected Ghana’s growing involvement in multilateral parliamentary relations and its support for the values shared among Francophone nations, including democracy, cultural diversity, and mutual cooperation.

He described Ghana’s admission as more than just symbolic.

According to him, it demonstrates the country's intention to exchange legislative experiences, build stronger ties with member states, and play an active role in the affairs of the APF.

Mr Bagbin added that Ghana was prepared to contribute meaningfully to APF activities, particularly in the areas of parliamentary training, governance, and the promotion of cultural and linguistic inclusion.

He reiterated Ghana’s belief in parliamentary diplomacy as a means to advance peace, human rights, and development across member countries.

He also encouraged the APF to review its internal mechanisms to respond more effectively to the growing challenges facing its members and pledged Ghana’s full and constructive participation.

The APF, established in 1967, brings together parliaments from member states of the OIF and provides a forum for legislative exchange and cooperation rooted in Francophone traditions and values.
