GHS, UG authorities move to contain mild COVID-19 outbreak on campus
The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed its collaboration with the University of Ghana to contain a recent COVID-19 outbreak within the university community.
In a statement issued by the Acting Director-General of the GHS, Professor Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, it was noted that all reported cases so far have been mild, with no hospital admissions.
Despite the mild nature of the cases, Prof Akoriyea urged the public to remain cautious and report symptoms such as fever or chills, cough, sore throat, fatigue, difficulty in breathing, or loss of taste or smell to the nearest health facility.
He encouraged the general public to continue observing preventive measures, especially in crowded or poorly ventilated areas, by wearing face masks and practising frequent handwashing.
The GHS assured both the university and the wider public that all necessary steps are being taken to control the outbreak and prevent further transmission effectively.
No longer a pandemic, but not over
The GHS reminded the public that while the World Health Organisation (WHO) no longer classifies COVID-19 as a global public health emergency, the virus still poses risks, and localised or seasonal outbreaks are likely to continue.
The Service emphasised the importance of maintaining basic preventive practices, including mask wearing, hand hygiene, social distancing, self-isolation when unwell, and avoiding large gatherings.
The GHS reiterated its commitment to protecting public health and called on all Ghanaians to remain vigilant and supportive of ongoing efforts to curb the spread of the virus.
