The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has averted what could have been a deadly tanker explosion after responding swiftly to an accident involving a petrol tanker at Hohoe in the Volta Region on Monday, December 9.
The tanker, with registration number GT-1140-18, veered off the road and crashed into a high-tension electricity pole before damaging a nearby container shop, triggering an emergency response from fire personnel.
According to the Service, firefighters ensured that electrical power to the fallen high-tension lines was immediately isolated before beginning operations, preventing possible ignition.
Firefighters from the Hohoe Municipal Command, led by Municipal Commander DO III Bismark Hosu Porbley, used foam concentrate to cool the tanker, which was carrying approximately 54,000 litres of petrol. Their intervention successfully eliminated the risk of an explosion.
The Hohoe Police provided additional support to ensure the safe recovery and towing of the tanker from the accident scene.
Although the tanker’s windscreen and head compartment sustained minor damage, no injuries were recorded.
The GNFS commended the coordinated effort between emergency responders and emphasised the importance of prompt reporting and adherence to safety protocols during road traffic incidents involving fuel tankers.
