Govt presents relief items

The Minister of Communication, Mr Edward Omane Boamah has on behalf on behalf of the government, presented relief items to flood victims in some communities in Accra.

The items which included rice, oil, sugar and milk were to be shared equally among the communities.

Beneficiary communities include, Odawna, Tema Municipal area, Santa Maria, Awoshie and Osu.

Briefing the media, Mr Omane Boamah said as a result of the floods some people in the affected areas had been rendered homeless and depended solely on their relatives and friends thus the decision to donate the items to help reduce the burden.

He said the items formed part of the GHC 50 million package President John Dramani Mahama had announced to be set aside to assist the victims. 

He added that the distribution of the relief items will be done under a four-day programme that will cover some assemblies, including Ga-East, Ga-West, Ga-Central, Ga-South, Ashaiman and La Dade-Kotopon (LadMA).

"We are working tirelessly round the clock to ensure that we are able to relief the suffering of the flood victims," he added.

Mr Omane expressed gratitude to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and security agencies on the ground to maintain order and sanity in the distribution of the items adding that the items would go a long way to affect lives positively.

He called on corporate bodies and individuals to join Government to help communities affected by the flood.

Osu Korley Klottey

The Member of Parliament of Osu Korley Klottey, Mr Nii Amarh Ashitey, accompanied by the NDC co-ordinator for Aslym Down, Mr Justice Asamani and other representatives visited and distributed the relief items to some communities in his constituency.

Some of the communities included Odawna and Aslym Down.

He expressed gratitude to the government for the items adding that it showed that it had not forgotten about the flood victims and was working to ensure that their lives were back to normal.

He reaffirmed Governments commitment towards assisting the flood victims to ensure that they recovered from the flood.

Receiving the items on behalf of the community, Mr Justice Asamani expressed his gratitude to government and gave the assurance that the items would be shared equally.

Background

A twin fire and flood disaster last Wednesday night left more than 150 people dead.

Houses and properties running into billions of Ghana cedis were also destroyed.
