GRTCC refutes increases in transport fares

The Chairman of the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), Mr Ben Peprah Amoabeng, has refuted claims of a 10 per cent increase in transport fares.

He said the disclosure by the General Secretary of the GRTCC of transport fare increases was not right, as executives were not aware of that decision.

“We are now deliberating over the fares,” Mr Peprah told the Daily Graphic.

He added that fuel was not the only component in the running of a commercial vehicle, for which reason fare increases could not be dependent on increases in fuel prices.

Additionally, the prices of other components in running a commercial vehicle, such as vehicle income tax and spare parts, were equally exorbitant.

He added that even when the fuel component alone was used, cumulative increases in fuel prices over the past three or four months showed that petrol had gone up more than 16 per cent, while diesel had seen a hike of more than 13 per cent.

Mr Amoabeng would not say if transport fares would be increased above 10 per cent, judging from his analysis.

When that was concluded, a presentation would be made to the Ministry of Transport before a formal announcement would be made.

Yesterday, the Daily Graphic published that the GRTCC had decided on a 10 per cent increase in transport fares.

It was based on an interview with the General Secretary of the GRTCC, Alhaji Aliyu Baba.
