Calm returns to Hamile border post after youth rampage
The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has appealed to the youth of Hamile in the Upper West Region to remain calm while it investigates last Saturday's unrest at the Hamily border post.
Following an accusation of high-handedness and misconduct on the part of some immigration officers stationed at the Hamile border post, some youth went on a rampage on Saturday evening, destroying property at the border post, including setting one vehicle ablaze.
They claimed the officers had allowed gunmen from Burkina Faso to enter Ghana illegally.
And so when the youth reportedly saw the immigration officers forcefully trying to repatriate a Burkinabe woman who was reportedly trying to seek refuge in Ghana, they decided to revolt.
This led to a clash between them and the immigration officers on Saturday evening at the Hamile border post in the Lambussie District of the Upper West Region.
In a press statement signed and issued by the Head of Public Affairs of GIS, Assistant Commissioner of Immigration, Michael Amoako Attah, the GIS assured the public that appropriate measures would be taken following the outcome of the investigation.
There was calm in the area as of Monday morning following the intervention of the security agencies.
