It’s proper to account to the people. Prez Mahama states at durbar in BA

President John Dramani Mahama has stated that as a lower middle-income country, Ghana needs to redouble its efforts in the provision of social amenities, especially in the rural areas, to keep its socio-economic progression on course.

He said it was the responsibility of the state to ensure fair distribution of social amenities, especially in the rural areas.

President Mahama was speaking at a durbar of chiefs and people of the Ahafo section of the Brong Ahafo Region at Dadiesoaba in the Asutifi South District, as part of his three-day “Accounting to the people” tour of the region.

Scores of people who converged on the durbar grounds at Dadiesoaba defied the hot afternoon weather and later, a drizzling to attend the durbar.

President Mahama explained that it was in view of such developmental problems across the country that the various political parties presented their manifestoes on what they could do when given the chance to rule the country.

“So it is proper for us to come back to you and give account of what we have been able to do within the last three-and-half years after you gave us your mandate.”

That, according to President Mahama, would also enable the people to know what the government had been able to do, while it would also give the government a fair idea about what more the people were expecting it to do to make them comfortable.

Development projects in B/A

On development projects, President Mahama said more than 1,000 communities in the region had been provided with electricity, while small town water systems and boreholes that had been provided were serving more than 300,000 people in the region.

He said in the Ahafo area of the region almost all the communities had electricity and potable water, while efforts were being made to rehabilitate the major roads in the area which had not been given attention for a long time.

“Nananom if you have bad roads in your area, it does not mean that they will not be given attention. We have a development plan for roads and every area in the country will have its fair share of the plan,” he said.

He said Brong Ahafo, one of the leading regions in the cultivation of cocoa and food crops, deserved good roads to ensure that those commodities could be transported to the marketing centres.

President Mahama pointed out that the rehabilitation of roads had huge economic advantages for the country and added that the government would, therefore, not relent in its efforts to rehabilitate and construct roads throughout the country.

He mentioned the Goaso-Tepa, Gambia No2-Kyeremasu, Mehame Junction-Dadiesoaba, Dadiesoaba-Twabidi, Dadiesoaba-Sienkyem-Kwakunyoma, Nkaseim-Nkrankrom, Hwidiem-Kenyasi, Mim town roads and Goaso town roads as some of the road projects that were ongoing in the region.

Others were the Nobekaw-Sankore, Sankore-Kokooso, Tepa-Bomaa, Yamfo-Bomaa, Duayaw Nkwanta-Bomaa and Techire-Adrobaa roads.

President Mahama said Sunyani as a regional capital was also being given a facelift with the rehabilitation and construction of inner and outer ring roads with asphalt overlays.

 Voter registration

He urged people who had attained the voting age and adults who for one reason or the other could not register, to ensure that they would register in the limited registration exercise from today, April 28 to May 8, 2016.

The President warned those who already had their names in the register not to attempt to do a double registration, to avoid putting themselves into trouble.

Agyewodin Adu Gyamfi Ampem

On behalf of the chiefs and people of the area, the Omanhene of the Acherensua Traditional Area, Agyewodin Professor Adu Gyamfi Ampem, thanked the government for the number of amenities it had provided for the people in the area.

He, however, called for the establishment of a university in the Ahafo section of the region to give the youth in the area easy access to tertiary education.
