On the occasion, the Accra Markets Limited, which has oversight responsibility over markets in the city, handed over to the management of the Kaneshie Market Complex a rehabilitated place of convenience.

The Chairperson of the Kaneshie Market Traders Association, Madam Lydia Kowa Quaye, expressed her gratitude for the support from the Accra Markets Limited. She said it demonstrated the commitment of Accra Market Limited to continue to assist the market to become a thriving business centre in the city.

She said the completion and hand over of the rehabilitated place of convenience had come at an opportune time, since it would contribute in keeping the market tidy, especially in the face of the outbreak of the cholera disease in certain parts of the city.

She advised members of the association to keep the facility clean and take good care of it.

Madam Quaye further called for unity and understanding among the traders since it was by doing so that the association could move forward purposefully and improve the fortunes of the market.

She mentioned unfair treatment from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and inconsistent power supply from the Electricity Company of Ghana as some of the challenges that traders in the market faced.

The Chairperson for the occasion, Nana Serwaa Acheampong, who is Head of the Legal Department of SIC Life,  commended the Accra Markets Limited for the support it had extended to the Kaneshie Market. She also mentioned the backing it gave the traders when rentals agreements in the market were being reviewed which showed how  the Accra Markets Limited valued the relationship between it and the Kaneshie Market traders.

She raised concerns over the outbreak of the cholera disease in the city and urged the traders to do all within their capacity to prevent it from spreading to the market.

She urged the traders to endeavour to dispose of their waste into litter bins that had been provided instead of littering the place.

Mrs Acheampong, who is also a member of the board of directors of the Kaneshie Market, said now that the market had its own borehole water system, it should encourage the traders to practise cleanliness at all times. She further cautioned them to be wary of the deadly Ebola disease and report early to the nearest health post with any signs of fever.

She commended the market women for their vigilance which has ensured that the market had remained free from fire outbreak.

“Even though we do not pray for fire, it will, nonetheless, be very prudent for the market to have its own fire department to fight any fire that may rear its head.

“All the same, it  is hoped that management of the market will continue to take the necessary steps to ensure that the market remained free of fires,” she said.

She assured members of the association that the board of directors of the Kaneshie Market would work to address the challenges they were having with the AMA.

‘We will not rest on our oars until the Market becomes the most attractive market in the city and a place of choice for doing business,” she added.
