The President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana (ICAG), Professor Kwame Boasiako Omane-Antwi, has challenged accountants to exhibit professionalism and uphold high integrity in the discharge of their duties.

He said this at the institute’s 23rd graduation and admission ceremony in Accra last Saturday.

Professor Omane-Antwi, who chaired the ceremony, urged the graduates to fully support ICAG by participating in its programmes to inculcate high ethical standards in the activities of accountants.

He advised them to live up to their professional calling as chartered accountants without any form of ethical breaches such as the cooking of books.

“I pray that you will uphold the tenets of integrity in the discharge of your profession as chartered accountants. Bear in mind that the reputation of a thousand years may be determined by the conduct of one act of honour,” he said.

Professor Omane-Antwi said Ghana seemed to be engulfed in an unprecedented spate of corruption in all aspects of the economy, adding that it would only take integrity to check the act of corruption.

Guest speaker’s remarks

A playwright, Mr Ebo Whyte, who was the Guest Speaker, advised the graduates to be content with their salaries and not engage in any form of fraudulent activities.

He said they should be responsible as accountants and take the right path of doing their work because Ghana needed them to transform the nation.

This year, 262 students graduated with certificates in the Chartered Accountants (CA) Programme, while 17 graduated with certificates in Accounting Technics Scheme West Africa (ATSWA).

The institute admitted 230 graduands and members of foreign accountancy bodies  to the Chartered Institute of Accountants Ghana (ICAG).
