So far, the refurbishment of units such as the dental, paediatric theatre, maternity block, mammography unit, laundry and catering departments have been completed under the project, which began in 2011.

Under the National Medical Equipment Replacement Project, 13 of the 23 theatres at the hospital will be renovated and equipped to ensure that quality services are rendered to patients.

Work on emergency centre

Speaking in an interview with the Daily Graphic, the Public Relations Officer of the hospital, Mr Mustapha Salifu, said work was still ongoing.

Currently, he said, the Central Outpatient Department was being converted to an Emergency Medicine Centre. In addition, the equipment for the refurbishment of the centre had already been shipped into the country and would be installed after the renovations.

To ensure that service delivery was not affected by the retooling exercise, Mr Salifu indicated that measures had been put in place to safeguard patients.

As part of the measures, he said, arrangement had been made for the transfer of patients who needed intensive care to the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital.

He acknowledged that the hospital faced challenges such as inadequate equipment and deplorable infrastructure, adding that “it is because of these challenges that the project is ongoing to address them”.

Although he could not give the exact time for the completion of the project,  Mr Salifu said the work was expected to be completed very soon.

“The next unit to be renovated and refurbished after the emergency centre is the accident unit which we intend to merge with the medical surgical centre to ensure effective collaboration between the two,”  he added.
