Kpong Water Treatment Plant resumes operation

Pumping of water from the Kpong Water Treatment Plant has resumed. This follows the complete replacement of its distribution pipelines to improve interconnectivity between the plant and its distribution chain by the Ghana Water Company (GWCL).

The plant was shut down for four days to allow the contractors executing the project to undertake critical works, including the connection of a new 72-inch steel raw water pipeline to the existing 60-inch fiber glass raw water pipeline.

Confirmation

The Station Manager for the Kpong Waterworks, Mr Ebo Akwandoh, confirmed the completion of the exercise when a Daily Graphic team visited the station to verify the completion of the four-day exercise last Monday.

According to him, new transformers had also been installed to ensure the effective operation of the newly installed pump and pipeline.

The Chief Manager in charge of Public Relations at GWCL, Mr Michael Agyemang, also said that pumping of water started at about 1 a.m. on Monday adding, “we are only waiting for the required pressure to build up so that affected communities will get water.”

Advantages of the replacement

He explained that a total of 56 million gallons of water would eventually be distributed by the Kpong Water Treatment Plant.

Before the repairs, the plant could only pump 40 million gallons of water but the replacement of the distribution lines had resulted in an additional 12.3 million gallons of water.

For his part, the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Mr Abraham Otabil, said the ministry was hopeful that the supply of water would be normalised soon.

Background

The shutdown of the Kpong Water Plant became necessary because its distribution lines, constructed in 1965, needed replacement.

The planned shutdown was to allow contractors executing the Kpong intake and Accra-Tema Metropolitan Assembly Rural Rehabilitation and Expansion Project to undertake critical pipeline interconnection.
