Kumasi police arrest 10 suspected armed robbers

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has arrested 10 people believed to be the brain behind the series of armed robberies that have rocked the Kumasi metropolis in the last two weeks.

The 10 suspects include two females who are alleged to be the financiers of one of the four gangs believed to be behind the armed robberies in the capital and its environs.

The names of the suspects have been given by the police as Ama Serwah, Akwasi Adjei, Richard Owusu, Adoagyiri Asana, Sandra Adu Gyamfi, Suleman Safiano, Azana Kassim and Kwame Anafo.

The identities of two others were given only as Alonso and Tonka.  

Background

In two weeks, three persons, including a policeman, lost their lives to robbery attacks in and around the metropolis. 

The latest was the killing of Joseph Baah Tweneboah, the Kumasi Metropolitan Crop Officer of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA), in the presence of his family at his residence at Aputuogya in the Bosomtwe District in the Ashanti Region.

Briefing

Briefing the press on Monday, the Deputy Ashanti Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mr Osei Kwaku Ampofo Duku, said the suspects were arrested at their hideouts after police investigations and tip-offs.

He said the police found out that four syndicates of robbers were behind the heinous crimes being perpetrated in the region.

He gave the names of the members of Group One as Bona (alias Ye Bedi Boni Ewu), Killer, Baby Last, Solo and Adepa Hamidu, all at large. 

Others are Alonso and Ama Serwaah, who have been arrested. 

They are all residents of Bolakesiem at Kwadaso but are occasionally seen at Asafo, around an area called BB.

According to ACP Ampofo Duku, when Ama was arrested at BB, the police found on her items such as 42 wrappers of a substance suspected to be Indian hemp, a mobile phone, an unspecified amount of Tramadol capsules and GH¢1,487.

Other groups

Members of Group Two were given as Abdulai, Tofwik, also known as Wadada, both residents of Obuasi and Ahwiankwanta, Kofi from Poano and a fourth one who is yet to be identified. 

They are all at large and being sought for by the police.

Group Three members are Djalo Dzani, resident of Ejisu; Azumah Yahaya, believed to be hiding in Wa; Mallam Lawyer, resident of Chiraa, and Sarakin, resident of Techiman or Ejisu, all at large.

The last group, Group Four, described as the most dangerous, comprised one Murtala, a dismissed policeman, suspected to be in possession of an AK47 assault rifle; Salo, also known as AK, and Tanko, an ex-convict.

Arms

According to the police, all the gangs got their supplies of arms from six persons, three of which the police had arrested. 

Those arrested are Azana Kassim, alias 50 Cent; Suleman Safiano, alias Keshi, and Kwame Anafo, alias Indomie, all residents of Ahinsan, a suburb of Kumasi.

The rest are Ambulay, a resident of Agogo; Tonka, a resident of Atwima Koforidua, and Mark Two, a resident of Akropong. 

They are all at large.
