Currently, metallic structures have been erected at the site, while almost all the buildings around the terminal have been demolished.

Engineers at the site would not state the percentage of work done so far.

The entire Kejetia-Central Market Redevelopment will cost $298 million.

The first phase, which involves the redevelopment of the Kejetia Terminal, will cost $198 million. More than 10,000 shops are to be provided under that phase. The Central Market Redevelopment, which will constitute the second phase, will cost $100 million.

Support KMA

Speaking to journalists during a visit to the site last Wednesday, Alhaji Dauda explained that it was to forestall the increasing and devastating fire outbreaks that destroyed the wares and capital of traders that the government secured a loan to undertake the project.

He urged the contractors to endeavour to complete the work on schedule.

He also urged the market women and other interest groups to support the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) and the contractors to ensure the speedy redevelopment of the market.

Last October, President John Dramani Mahama and the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, cut the sod for the commencement of construction of the four-phase project which will turn the terminal into more than 10,000 shops, with modern facilities.

Facilities

Among the facilities to be provided under the project are CCTV systems powered by a solar power generation plant on the roof, modern sewerage and waste management facilities, a water reservation and sewer treatment station, among others.

Others are a large parking lot, a bus terminal, a clinic, a police station, a crèche and some community facilities that will all change the skyline of Kumasi after completion.

Financing

Financing of the project is under the New Public Debt Management Strategy, for which reason an on-lending agreement has been signed with the KMA.

It means the government has taken the loan and lent it to the KMA.
