Mahama on how he first met Lordina as a student while teaching at GHANASCO

President John Dramani Mahama has shared a personal reflection on how he met his wife, Lordina Mahama.

He was speaking at the 65th anniversary of the Ghana National Senior High School in Tamale (GHANASCO) on Saturday, November 22, 2025,

President Mahama explained that he first arrived at GHANASCO in 1971 after completing primary school in Accra.

“I arrived at the gates of Ghana School in 1971… I came a bit disappointed because I wanted to join my brothers in Tamale Secondary,” Mr Mahama said.

He added that his father directed him to GHANASCO, where he received his admission letter from the headmaster, Mr Ofi. “Young man, we have a space for you and here is your admission letter. Report to school on this date,” he recalled the headmaster telling him.

Mr Mahama described his early days at the school, saying, “I was posted to Cabral House and became Cabral House prefect.”

During his national service after university, Mr Mahama returned to GHANASCO and taught Lordina, who was then a Form Four student.

The president shared the anecdote with light-hearted remarks saying, “When I came back to do my national service, I taught her for my national service year… and then she finished Ghana School and went and became a teacher in Banville Primary. When I came back and I met her again, she had finished school.”

The President also reflected on GHANASCO’s history and growth, noting that the school was founded under the Ghana Education Trust programme.

He said that while the student population has grown to 4,500, “the facilities have not expanded too much beyond what they were when we were there,” pointing to ongoing pressure on dormitories and staff accommodation and the need for continued development.
