Mr Prah made the call at the launch of the 2014 initiative of the “Support for Girls’ Mathematics Education” in Accra on Wednesday, which is aimed at generating the interest of girls in mathematics.

The initiative, spearheaded by MAREDES of the Knights and Ladies of Marshalls of the Catholic Church, is part of the group’s charitable activities which also include public advocacy.

As part of the initiative, MAREDES would distribute mathematical sets to female students in deprived communities across the country next month.

Mr Prah said, “the initiative is aimed at encouraging girls both psychologically and practically to improve their interest in mathematics in order to reach enviable height.”

Benefits of project

Briefing the media on the initiative, Mr Prah said the initiative was targeted at reaching 3,000 girls in the deprived areas; 300 female junior high school pupils would benefit from the project in each of the 10 regions.

He confirmed that the project was not only meant for Catholic schools, and assured that other schools would be considered.

Mr Prah commended Ecobank for their immense contribution and support towards the project, and called on other corporate organisations and institutions to emulate the gesture.

He said MAREDES was putting measures in place to provide scholarships and books to sustain the interest of girls in school.

Ecobank Supports

A representative of Ecobank Ghana, Mr Ernest Hayford, pledged the company’s support towards the programme.

He presented a dummy cheque for GH¢20,000 on behalf of the company to the leadership of MAREDES.

“The girl child is usually not given much attention in the area of mathematics in recent times,” he said.

Mr Hayford said a lot of girls in the deprived areas lacked materials which would enhance their studies, and added that if they were assisted with the necessary materials they would excel.
