Dramatic Dzorwulu chase nets alleged phone-snatching duo, 4 more held
A routine police patrol in Dzorwulu has led to the dramatic arrest of two suspected street robbers and the recovery of a haul of stolen mobile phones and cash, subsequently uncovering a broader robbery network in Accra.
The Kotobabi District Police Command confirmed the arrest of Stephen Gletsu, 37, and Mohammed Sheriff, 20, following an intelligence-led operation on Wednesday, 14th January 2026.
According to a police report, a patrol team on a service motorbike encountered the two individuals "riding an unregistered black Royal 125 motorbike."
Both men were "dressed in all-black attire with black helmets," and critically, "the pillion rider was observed wielding a cutlass." Upon noticing the police, the suspects sped off, triggering a chase during which warning shots were fired. The pursuit ended near the Nigerian High Commission at Roman Ridge when the suspects lost control and fell off their motorbike. Although they attempted to flee on foot, they were traced and apprehended.
A search of the duo yielded a cache of suspected stolen goods, including: "one Infinix mobile phone, one iPhone 12 Pro, one Samsung A21, one iPhone 15 Pro, one iPhone 13, one Infinix feature phone, one iel feature phone, one Nokia feature phone, one Infinix X6528 phone, a necklace, and cash in the sum of Two Thousand Six Hundred and Ninety Ghana Cedis (GH¢2,690.00) and Two Dollars (USD 2)." The pair sustained injuries during the arrest and received treatment at the Police Hospital.
During interrogation, the accused persons "admitted to committing the robbery and confessed to having robbed several unsuspecting victims within the Accra Metropolis."
The police confirmed that "statements have been obtained from several victims who have identified both the accused persons and their stolen mobile phones," with victims narrating how they were attacked with a machete and robbed.
The initial arrests have had a ripple effect, as "further investigations have led to the arrest of four additional accomplices." Gletsu and Sheriff have been remanded into police custody, put before the court, and are scheduled to reappear on Wednesday, February 4, 2026. The Accra Regional Police Command has reiterated its "continued commitment to combating street robbery and other criminal activities within the Metropolis."
