2026 UG Corporate Football League launched as champions face tough draw

The 2026 University of Ghana Corporate Football League was officially launched on Tuesday, February 3, with organisers promising a sharper, more competitive tournament as corporate institutions prepare for another season of organised football at the University of Ghana Stadium.

The launch, held at the Stadium’s VIP Room, brought together senior officials of the University of Ghana, heads of participating corporate bodies, media partners and league organisers for the official balloting and unveiling of the league trophy. It marked the formal start of the second edition of the competition, which follows a successful debut season last year.

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, said the league continues to reinforce the link between leadership development and sport, describing football as an important complement to academic and professional life.

“When colleagues swap boardrooms for jerseys, they learn about collaboration and teamwork which they then take back to the boardroom,” she said. “This year’s league is about scaling impact. We have listened to feedback and strengthened partnerships with sponsors and media.”

She also confirmed a strategic shift by the University of Ghana for the new season. After entering five separate teams in the inaugural edition, the University will compete with a single consolidated side in 2026.

“The first edition taught us strategy,” Prof. Amfo explained. “That’s why we have moved from scattering our strengths to consolidating and presenting a single, unified University of Ghana team.”

The team balloting, led by Chief Executive Officer of Rite Sports Services, Yaw Sakyi Afari, offered early insight into what lies ahead. Defending champions, the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, were drawn in a challenging group, setting up several high-profile fixtures against both established teams and new entrants.

The official league trophy was later presented in a brief ceremony attended by a representative from the office of the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, alongside the Vice Chancellor and the University Registrar, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah, who jointly declared the competition open.

Director of the University of Ghana Sports and Wellness Directorate, Dr. Austin Luguterah, said the league remains focused on promoting employee wellness and reducing workplace stress through regular physical activity. He noted that lessons from the first edition had informed improvements in organisation and matchday delivery.

The launch ended with confident remarks from the defending champions, Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, who signalled their intention to retain the title, as the countdown begins toward another keenly contested season.
