"We need to see the regional force in place and, of course, Europeans will do whatever it takes to support it," she said.

Chancellor Merkel, who condemned the atrocities being carried out by the militant Islamic group, commended President Mahama for the bold steps he and ECOWAS were taking to defeat the group.

She said although European nations might not directly contribute troops to the regional force, they would be ready to fund the operations in a sustainable manner.

The German Chancellor, who was speaking at a news conference with her guest after the two had held talks in Berlin yesterday, said, "I will talk to the EU to see how to handle the issues."

President Mahama is on a state visit to Germany.

Earlier yesterday, he had held a similar meeting with the German President, Mr Joachim Gauck.
