Midwives urged to uphold professional ethics

The Principal of the Hohoe Midwifery Training School, Ms Narki Doku, has advised midwives to uphold professional ethics and good practices to promote maternal health care.
She said that would also encourage pregnant women to seek ante natal and postnatal care services, and ensure that pregnant women delivered under the supervision of qualified midwives in approved health centres, instead of seeking the services of traditional birth attendants and herbalists.

Ms Doku gave the advise during the matriculation ceremony of the seventh batch of 110 students pursuing a three-year diploma in midwifery programme in the school at Hohoe in the Volta Region last Friday.

She said they should be guided by the principles and ethics of the profession, good judgment and compassion, and give pregnant women dignified care.

That, she said, was necessary to minimise the use of services from traditional birth attendants and herbalists by expectant women.

Ms Doku said the school had now been affiliated to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) which would now award students with a diploma certificate, in addition to an institutional accreditation granted by the National Accreditation Board.

Ms Doku commended the Ministry of Health for providing the school with a multi-purpose three-storey classroom block and, further, appealed to the municipal and district assemblies in the region and other stakeholders to come to their aid and expand their infrastructure.
