The GH¢55.5 million project forms part of the rehabilitation of cocoa roads in the country by the government.

The project, which is being executed by the Progressive Modern Construction (PMC) Limited, will be given a bituminous surface. It is expected to be completed in 15 months starting from February this year.

The citizens at the beneficiary communities are noted for their production of cocoa and tomatoes. However, following the bad nature of the roads in those areas, the farmers are unable to cart their produce to market centres such as Bechem, Duayaw Nkwanta, Sunyani and Kumasi.

It was, therefore, not surprising that the residents of Derma took to the streets amid drumming and dancing when Mr Opoku, accompanied by his deputy, Justice Samuel Adjei, and the MP for Tano South, Ms Hanna Louisa Bissiw, jointly cut the sod for the project.

Projects

Mr Opoku said the Tano South district had had its fair share of development projects during President John Dramani Mahama’s tenure.

He said currently work on a community day senior high school by the government was nearing completion at Derma.

The minister indicated that nation building required a step-by-step approach and, therefore, pleaded with Ghanaians to have patience with the government to enable it to implement its development plans.

On the project, Mr Opoku commended the contractors for their commitment and expressed the hope that they would not only deliver quality work, but also complete the project within schedule.

Commendation

Dr Bissiw, who is also a Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, commended the government for responding to the call of the people for the rehabilitation of the road.

“Today our dream has come true and we are feverishly looking forward to the completion of work to facilitate transportation in the area,” she said.

The Chief Executive Officer of PMC Limited, contractors for the project, Alhaji Ahmed Abdallah, gave an assurance that the project would be completed within eight months ahead of its 15-month duration.

“Quality is the hallmark of our company,” he said, and assured the people of quality work that would stand the test of time.
