Ministry assures public of care for abandoned infant found in Central Region

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has confirmed that a newborn baby discovered abandoned near Bronyibima Estate in Elmina in the Central Region is in stable condition and receiving medical attention.

In an official statement dated February 19, 2026, the Ministry said the infant, believed to be approximately one day old at the time she was found, is under close supervision to ensure her safety and well-being.

“The baby, believed to be approximately one day old, is currently receiving medical attention and is reported to be in a stable condition,” the statement said.

According to the Ministry, officials from the Department of Social Welfare have assumed temporary custody of the child while investigations continue.

“Officials from the Department of Social Welfare have taken temporary custody of the child to ensure her safety. The Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare, continues investigations to identify and locate the mother or any close relatives,” it stated.

The Ministry assured the public that the infant’s welfare remains paramount as authorities work to trace her family.

“MoGCSP assures the public that the baby’s overall well-being remains our priority, and appropriate arrangements have been made to ensure the baby is well catered for, while we continue to trace the family,” the statement added.

The Ministry commended residents who intervened to rescue the baby and appealed for public cooperation in the ongoing investigation.

“The Ministry commends community members who rescued the baby and appeals to anyone with information that could assist the ongoing investigation to come forward. We also urge parents or guardians facing challenges to seek support through appropriate social welfare services in situations involving unplanned or crisis pregnancies,” it said.

As part of its response, the Ministry encouraged the public to utilise its support services, including the Helpline of Hope Call Centre.

“The public is further encouraged to access the Ministry’s Helpline of Hope Call Centre on its toll-free lines (0800-800-800/0800-900-900) for support and guidance, or to report any information that may assist in protecting children and vulnerable persons,” the statement noted.

The Ministry further underscored the seriousness of child abandonment, describing it as a violation of children’s rights.

“The Ministry emphasizes that abandoning a child is a serious violation of their rights and remains committed to protecting the welfare of all children,” it concluded.

The case has sparked concern among residents in Elmina, with authorities urging vigilance and community support as efforts continue to locate the child’s relatives and determine the circumstances surrounding the abandonment.
