Mob lynch "car battery thief" at Mamobi

An alleged thief was Wednesday night beaten to death by an angry mob at Mamobi in Accra.

He was said to have attempted to steal the battery of a mini bus [trotro] which had been parked around 9:30pm.

According to an eyewitness the driver of the vehicle had parked it at the shoulder of the road to watch a football match [European Champions League] at a nearby cinema.

The thief realizing how quiet the place was managed to break into the car and was about to leave with the battery when luck eluded him.

The driver who had returned to drive off caught him and the exchanges between them immediately drew the attention of people around who began beating the alleged thief.

They dragged him towards the Mamobi Hospital driveway where he was beaten some more by the mob.

Another eye witness said the alleged thief had recently been released from the Nsawam prison.

The eye witness said in the cause of beating him, some of the assailants began stabbing him with various sharp objects including a knife.

The police were later called to intervene but it was too late by which time the thief had already died.

The police later conveyed the body to the Police Hospital.
