MrBeast: YouTuber fires back at critics of his decision to build a hospital in Ghana instead of America

World-renowned YouTuber and philanthropist Jimmy Donaldson, popularly known as MrBeast, has responded strongly to criticism over his decision to fund the construction of a hospital in the Central region of Ghana to serve children rescued from slavery.

The facility, built in partnership with Ghana Make a Difference (GMAD), aims to provide surgical and medical care to children formerly trafficked in Ghana’s fishing industry—many of whom had gone years without proper healthcare.

In a video shared on April 6, MrBeast announced the completion of the hospital within the GMAD compound, saying the move was inspired by the urgent healthcare needs of children in the organization’s shelter.

“There were extremely long wait times at the nearest hospitals and children in the GMAD program were struggling to access medical treatment,” he explained.

The GMAD Surgical Centre initiative, part of his broader mission to fight child slavery in Africa, is the latest in a string of humanitarian projects spearheaded by his nonprofit, Beast Philanthropy.

Since its launch in 2021, the foundation has opened a food bank, funded surgeries for the visually impaired, and distributed thousands of shoes to underprivileged children.

However, despite the project being widely applauded on YouTube, MrBeast’s announcement triggered a wave of backlash on other social media platforms. One commenter on X (formerly Twitter) wrote, “How about you help Americans if you’re gonna virtue signal for profit?”

MrBeast did not hold back in his response. “We do routine food drives in America and give millions of meals away for free to Americans each year,” he retorted. “If I listed out all the projects we’ve done in America this tweet would be a book. Yet every time I help people in Africa, my top reply is ‘I don’t help my own country’ lol.”

Indeed, Beast Philanthropy has been active across the United States. Among its numerous projects, the organization recently partnered with The Phoenix, a nonprofit focused on addiction recovery, to raise funds for rehabilitation programs.

But MrBeast is no stranger to controversy. His philanthropic content has often drawn skepticism, with critics accusing him of “exploiting” people’s hardships for social media engagement. Still, he maintains that the impact of these projects far outweighs the backlash.

His latest efforts in Africa form part of a year-long campaign to tackle child slavery across the continent. Prior to the hospital project, MrBeast introduced a program to provide free breakfasts in schools—an initiative designed to boost school attendance and reduce child labour vulnerabilities.

In Ghana, where access to timely healthcare remains a challenge in many rural communities, the new surgical center stands to make a significant difference in the lives of vulnerable children. For MrBeast, it’s not about the praise or the criticism—it’s about impact. As he puts it, “We’re just getting started.”
