The items included 100 wheelbarrows, 500 gloves, 500 wellington boots, 400 long brooms and 200 shovels, rakes, and machetes.

According to Mr Johan Ferreira, the Regional Senior Vice President of Newmont Africa Operations, the company, like the ministry, is interested in protecting the environment.

He was, therefore, hopeful that the tools would help the ministry to realise its objective of having cleaner, safer and healthier neighbourhoods.

Projects

He said Newmont had adopted a community participatory approach with the aim of driving development in its host mining communities in Akyem and Ahafo, through its development foundations that had been established in these areas.

He said the Newmont Ahafo Development Foundation (NADef) had so far accrued over US$23 million, while that of the Newmont Akyem Development Foundation (NAkDeF) which was set up in 2014 had grossed US$1.3 million dollars.

“The foundations are doing a lot for our host communities and we look forward to using them to drive sustained socio-economic development in those host communities,” he said.

Donate towards sanitation exercises

The Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Alhaji Collins Dauda, urged individuals and corporate institutions to lend a helping hand by providing equipment towards the national sanitation day activities.

According to him, the ministry is currently in short supply of sanitation equipment and the situation is affecting the operations of the ministry with regard to the national sanitation day exercises.

He said even though some organisations had contributed immensely to the exercises, there was more to be done in order to achieve success with the sanitation exercises nationwide.

He assured the donors that the equipment would be put to good use.
