One dead, three injured as fuel tanker and tipper truck collide on Accra–Tema Motorway

A head-on collision between a tipper truck and a fuel tanker on the Accra–Tema Motorway has left one person dead and three others injured after the tanker burst into flames, the Ghana National Fire Service has confirmed.

The incident occurred between Saka Saka Park and Tanink Ghana at approximately 11:49 pm on Monday, June 8. The Tema Motorway Fire Crew was dispatched within one minute and arrived on scene at 11:54 pm to find the fuel tanker, registration number AS 3555-24 belonging to GIG EMPIRE, fully engulfed in flames.

According GNFS, reinforcements from Ashaiman Fire Station and Tema Industrial Area Fire Station, supported by a water tanker from the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly, arrived shortly afterwards. The fierce fire was brought under control at 12:56 am and fully extinguished at 1:44 am on Tuesday.

Three injured occupants, Kwabena Agyapong, Joseph Teye Quarshie, and Aaron Kyei, were rushed to Tema General Hospital before the fire crew arrived. The charred remains of a male, believed to be the driver of the tipper truck with registration AS 466-19, were later retrieved and handed over to the police at 2:19 am.

The fire caused extensive damage, including the complete burnout of 26 tyres on the tanker, severe structural destruction to both vehicle fronts, and the loss of an undetermined quantity of fuel.

Fuel transfer operations are currently underway at the crash scene. Three firefighting crews, together with the Ashaiman Fire Engine and a water tanker, remain on standby to mitigate any potential fire risk.

The cause of the crash and fire remains under investigation. Motorists using the motorway are advised to exercise extreme caution and comply with all traffic directions as clearance and recovery operations continue.
