Parliament has instituted investigations into the recruitment scam that hit the Ghana Police Service last Saturday.

Parliament initiated the move after the Member for Nabdam, Mr Adagbila Boniface Gambila, drew the attention of the House to the amount of money those who had been swindled had lost and the seriousness of the matter.

The First Deputy Speaker, Mr Ebo Barton-Odro, who presided over proceedings, told the House that the Parliamentary Select Committee on Defence and the Interior had already launched investigations into the matter.

But the Minority Leader, Mr Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, reminded Mr Barton-Odro that if he (Barton-Odro) did not make a formal request to the committee to investigate the matter, it would not be bound to inform the plenary of its findings as stipulated by the rules of the House.

Mr Barton-Odro then formally directed the committee to investigate the matter and report to the House as soon as possible.

Committee meets IGP

A few minutes after the Speaker had issued the directive,  the committee met a delegation from the Ghana Police Service, led by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr Mohammed Alhassan.

A source close to the committee, however, told the Daily Graphic that the IGP assured the committee that it would get to the bottom of the matter.

It said the IGP told the committee that 14 of those alleged to have swindled the young men and women had been identified and arrested.
