Petrol price floor hits GH¢11.57, diesel reaches GH¢14.35 in new NPA pricing window

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has raised the minimum price thresholds for petroleum products for the second pricing window of March, a move that signals possible increases in pump prices across the country from March 16.

Under the revised price floors, petrol has been set at GH¢11.57 per litre, up from GH¢10.46 recorded between March 1 and 15. Diesel has seen a sharper adjustment, climbing to GH¢14.35 per litre from GH¢11.42, while liquefied petroleum gas has increased to GH¢10.67 per kilogramme from GH¢9.38.

The adjustments mean petrol has risen by GH¢1.11 per litre within the same month, diesel by GH¢2.93, and LPG by GH¢1.29, reflecting mounting pressure on fuel costs.

In a directive to oil marketing firms, the authority stated: “As per the Petroleum Products Pricing Guidelines (PPPG), all Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) and LPG Marketing Companies (LPGMCs) are entreated to comply with the above price floors for the window under consideration.”

The NPA explained that the benchmark prices do not represent the final amounts motorists will pay at the pump because they exclude several additional cost components. These include premiums charged by International Oil Trading Companies, operating margins for Bulk Import, Distribution and Export Companies, and dealer margins determined by individual oil marketing firms.

The authority added that “these will be independently determined by the companies as pertains under the PPPG.”

Industry analysts say the revised thresholds could push retail prices higher once additional levies and operational costs are factored in.

Rising global crude prices linked to renewed tensions in the Middle East are widely cited as the main driver of the expected increases.
