'Physically challenged have potential to perform tasks'

The Proprietress of the Sunflower School at Darkuman in Accra, Mrs Lawrencia Ahiabor, has urged Ghanaians to not look down on physically-challenged persons in society.

According to her, such persons also have abundance of skills and inherent capacities to perform various tasks in many areas of human endeavours. She said if the potentialities of the physically challenged were prudently tapped, the society was bound to reap enormous benefits.

“If we can identify and capture the best in them, it would be to the benefit of society in the long run,” she said.

Mrs Ahiabor made the statement on the occasion of celebrating the school’s 20th anniversary cum 18th annual speech and graduation ceremony.

Cultural performance

Students from the Dzorwulu Special School in Accra entertained the audience with various cultural and acrobatic performances to the surprise of many at the ceremony. At certain stages during their performances, the students received standing ovation and were showered with praises.

Mrs Ahiabor said she was astounded by the performance put up by the students from the Dzorwulu Special School. She said she was so moved that she had to present the school with a cash prize of GH¢2,000.

20 years of achievements

Mrs Ahiabor noted that since its inception, the Sunflower School had chalked up a number of successes, and this year was no different.

“We are proud to say that the least that each student had in a subject presented was a grade six, with 55 per cent of our students getting one in all nine subjects presented,” she said.

She said the good results did not come easy but by dint of hard work and sound moral principles put in place by the school.

“Our pupils cried while going through the mill, but in the end they are laughing,” she said.

Advice to parents

Mrs Ahiabor advised parents to not commit all their energies to the pursuit of riches at the expense of the academic pursuits of their children.
