The Upper East Regional Police Command has launched a search for a commercial tricycle rider [aboboyaa] who allegedly assaulted a police man during a stop-and-search operation at Garu.
The incident occurred on Monday, October 6, 2025, when a police team working with Community Protection Assistants (CPAs) mounted a checkpoint along the Garu–Nakpanduri road.
In a police statement, Chief Inspector Abdul-Rahman Sumalia who speaks for the police in the Upper East Region said the police team intercepted a tricycle loaded with sacks of groundnuts, with passengers sitting on top of the goods. When the rider was instructed to stop and park properly for inspection, he allegedly became aggressive, attacked the officer, and fled the scene.

The police said investigations had begun and efforts were underway to arrest the suspect.
“The Command is making every effort to arrest the tricycle rider and ensure he faces the full rigours of the law,” the statement noted.
The statement also urged residents of Garu and surrounding communities to provide information that could assist in locating the suspect.
The Upper East Regional Police Command has recently intensified operations against road safety violations, particularly among commercial tricycle operators, popularly known as “pragyia” riders.
