Police investigation conclude Afenyo-Markin assaulted policeman during ‘Save the Judiciary’ demo; Docket awaiting A-G's prosecutorial review

Following investigations by the police that concluded that the Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin assaulted a policeman during the "Save the Judiciary" protest in May 2025, the docket has been forwarded to the Attorney-General's office for advise.

The police concluded the investigation and sent the case docket to the A-G's office with a cover letter dated June 27, 2025.

Almost five months after the incident, the case docket is still at the A-G's Office awaiting prosecutorial review and decision.

In a Facebook post on Friday [November 7, 2025], the Deputy Attorney-General, Justice Srem-Sai, confirmed that the case docket was currently with the A-G.

“I can confirm that the docket on the case, The Republic v Alexander Afenyo-Markin, is at the Office of the Attorney-General awaiting prosecutorial review and decision. The case involves a complaint of assault.”

Per details of the docket, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service found that Mr Afenyo-Markin assaulted a policeman during the “Save the Judiciary” demonstration in May this year.

A letter dated June 27, 2025, and signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police Justice Oppong, acting on behalf of the Director-General of the CID, indicated that the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) had completed its work and forwarded the duplicate case docket, with reference number 129/2025, to the Attorney-General’s Department for advice.

According to the CID report, the incident occurred on May 5, 2025, at about 5:00 p.m. when operatives from the Cybercrime Unit at CID Headquarters received a 13-second video clip bearing the official Ghana Police Service watermark.

The preliminary analysis of the footage, according to the letter, “revealed a physical altercation between a group of demonstrators and personnel of the Ghana Police Service deployed for crowd control and security duties during the ‘Save the Judiciary’ demonstration.”

The CID said the confrontation happened when police officers attempted to maintain a restricted boundary with a metal barricade.

The video captured Mr Afenyo-Markin “striking a police officer identified as No. 48632 G/Cpl. Forson Abel, stationed at Tesano District, who was one of the duty officers.”

The report stated that on May 6, 2025, Corporal Forson Abel reported the alleged assault at the Tesano Police Station and later visited the CID Headquarters with “an extract of occurrence and an endorsed police medical form after attending the hospital for treatment.” The officer, according to the letter, “gave his complaint statement to the effect that he was assaulted by Alexander Afenyo-Markin.”

The CID said witness statements were obtained from Superintendent I. Ocansey, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sulemana-Jallo Abdulalai of the Greater Accra Regional Police Headquarters, and Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nicholas Mensah of the Achimota District, who were all on duty with Cpl. Forson Abel during the demonstration.

The witnesses, according to the letter, “submitted statements to police to the effect that Alexander Afenyo-Markin struck G/Cpl. Forson Abel in the face without any provocation.”

The letter also indicated that on May 6, 2025, “a counter-complaint in a petition letter dated 5th May, 2025, was received from Alexander Afenyo-Markin alleging that he had been assaulted by G/Cpl. Abel Forson.”

The CID said that on May 8, 2025, “a team of investigators comprising personnel from the Special Investigation Unit, Crime Scene Management, and Cybercrime Unit, together with the above-mentioned officers, visited the crime scene for reconstruction.”

According to the police, two CCTV cameras were identified at the Accra International Conference Centre “which are believed to have captured the incident.” A formal request was then sent to the National Security Secretariat to provide video footage from those cameras.

The CID letter stated that “footage received from the National Security through the National Signals Bureau was analysed by the Cybercrime Unit, but it did not capture the assault incident.”

Instead, “based on the analysis of the video obtained from the Police Public Affairs Department on 9th May, 2025, Mr Alexander Afenyo-Markin was cautioned in the presence of an independent witness and released on self-recognisance bail.”

The letter further indicated that a police medical form was issued to Mr Afenyo-Markin to attend hospital and report back. Witness statements were also taken “from Mr Sammy Awuku and Mr Richard Ahiagbah, who were seen in the video close to Alexander Afenyo-Markin.”

The CID document added that “ Mr Alexander Afenyo-Markin, however, failed to return the Police Medical Report Form despite several calls to him to do so.”

The case docket has since been transmitted to the Attorney-General’s Department for legal advice on the next steps to be taken.
