Police warn against violence, intimidation and misinformation at Ayawaso East by-election
The Accra Regional Police Command has warned that any individual who engages in violence, intimidation or the spread of misinformation during the Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election will face the full rigours of the law.
The caution was contained in a press release issued on March 2, 2026, and signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, as voters prepared to elect a new Member of Parliament on March 3, 2026.
According to the statement, the Command has deployed police personnel to all polling stations and key locations within the constituency to maintain law and order throughout the exercise. Officers are to maintain a visible presence and undertake patrols before, during and after voting to prevent any breach of the peace.
The Command further cautioned the public against acts that could undermine the electoral process, including violence, intimidation and the dissemination of false information. It urged eligible voters to remain calm and to report any suspicious activity to the security agencies.
The by-election follows the death of the Member of Parliament, Mr Mahama Naser Toure, who died in January while receiving treatment at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
Five candidates are contesting the seat. The National Democratic Congress candidate, Mr Baba Jamal Ahmed Mohammed, a former High Commissioner to Nigeria, occupies the first position on the ballot following the draw held on February 12, 2026.
He is contesting against Mr Ibrahim Iddrisu of the Liberal People’s Party, Mr Yussif Baba Ali of the New Patriotic Party, and two independent candidates, Alhaji Mohammed Umaru Sanda and Mr David Kannor.
Voting is scheduled to commence at 7 a.m. and close at 5 p.m., with more than 50,000 registered voters expected to cast their ballots across polling stations in the constituency.
The heightened security measures come amid lingering public concern over election-related disturbances in the Ayawaso area, particularly following the violence that marred the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election in 2019.
The statement was issued by the Ghana Police Service, Accra Regional Public Affairs Unit, and signed by Superintendent Obeng.
