President Mahama heads to UN to champion reparatory justice for Africa

President John Dramani Mahama is set to lead Ghana’s delegation to the United States for a high-level engagement on reparatory justice and the remembrance of victims of the transatlantic slave trade.

The President is expected to depart Accra on Monday (March 23, 2026) for New York and Pennsylvania for what officials describe as a historic visit focused on advancing global discourse on historical injustice.

A key highlight of the visit will be his participation in a High-Level Special Event on Reparatory Justice at the United Nations (UN) Headquarters on Tuesday, where he will convene and deliver the keynote address.

The event, themed “Reparatory Justice for the Trafficking of Enslaved Africans and the Racialised Chattel Enslavement of Africans,” is expected to bring together world leaders and senior officials to deliberate on the legacy of slavery and the case for reparations.

On Wednesday, President Mahama will address the United Nations General Assembly as part of activities marking the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade.

During the session, he is expected to present Ghana’s position, which has been adopted by the African Union, on a landmark resolution seeking to declare “the trafficking of enslaved Africans and the racialised chattel enslavement of Africans as the gravest crime against humanity.”

The visit will begin with a wreath-laying ceremony at the African Burial Ground National Monument in New York, where the President will pay tribute to enslaved Africans.

As part of his itinerary, President Mahama will also travel to Lincoln University to deliver a keynote address, and later engage with the Ghanaian community at Temple University.
