President Mahama swears in new Armed Forces Council; calls for stronger action against galamsey
President John Dramani Mahama has sworn in a newly constituted Ghana Armed Forces Council, urging its members to provide steady leadership and uphold military professionalism amid internal and regional security challenges.
“This is not just a routine constitutional duty. It’s a reminder of our shared responsibility to preserve the peace, discipline, and integrity of the Armed Forces,” President Mahama stated after administering the oaths of allegiance and secrecy at a brief ceremony on Monday, March 24, 2025, at Jubilee House, Accra.
“Our Armed Forces are not just an institution within our security setup. They are the defenders of our sovereignty, the protectors of our democracy, and a source of pride for every Ghanaian.”
Established under Article 211 of the 1992 Constitution, the Armed Forces Council advises the President on matters relating to defence policy, military strategy, administration, and promotions.
The reconstituted Council is chaired by Professor Nana Jane Opoku-Agyemang. Other members include Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Mr Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, Chief Warrant Officer Daniel Addo, Brigadier General (Rtd) Fuseni Idrisu, and Miss Nancy Dacwa Ampofo.
President Mahama expressed gratitude to the outgoing Council members for their service and assured the newly appointed members of his government’s full support.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to investing in military infrastructure, logistics, and personnel welfare, while also strengthening regional partnerships in peacekeeping and counter-terrorism efforts.
“The strength of our Armed Forces depends not only on the courage of those in uniform but on the quality of leadership and sound decisions guiding them,” the President said.
