Rainstorm destroys facilities at Saint Francis College of Education

ACTIVITIES on the campus of the Saint Francis College of Education (FRANCO) at Hohoe have come to a standstill following heavy rainfall last Tuesday.

The rainfall, apart from ripping off the roofing sheets of several classroom blocks, also resulted in the destruction of electricity poles, resulting in a blackout on the FRANCO campus.

The principal’s residence also had its ceilings blown away, while the roofing sheets remained intact.

The arch at the main entrance of the college was also knocked down and it took the students some time to clear the debris to allow free flow of movement to the campus. There were, however, no casualties in spite of the severity of the destruction.

Electricity poles were downed during the storm, causing a power outage

The Principal, Dr Adwoa Kwagyiriba, has, following the destruction, issued a caution to the students to remain alert to avoid any mishap. She expressed worry that all calls to the Electricity Company of Ghana had remained unheeded.

Dr Kwagyiriba therefore made a passionate appeal to benevolent institutions and organisations to come to their aid.

The principal said the college’s main concern now was for electricity to be restored to allow teaching and learning to proceed while remedial actions were being sought.

Officials of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), led by Hilarius Gockel, were on the campus to assess the extent of damage.

Mr Gockel said the arch that was left standing posed a threat to the students and the community so they have alerted the engineers at the Hohoe Municipal Assembly to take immediate action on it.
